Gir is best known as the last home of the Asiatic Lion. Gir Sanctuary was created in 1965 and was declared a National Park in 1975. In Gir, there are over 350 lions, more than 250 leopards, over 50,000 ungulates, 300 species of bird, 500 species of trees and more than 2,000 species of insects.

Located in the south-west fringes of the Saurashtra Peninsula, The Gir National Park is a haven to about 300 Asiatic Lions which is their last surviving population. This area flanked with three unique and unusual reserves, the Nalsarovar Lake and Sanctuary; the Rann of Kutch and the Flamingo Islands which is home to the flamingo, make it a very interesting tourist spot. The Gir National Park is the only game reserve in the world where you can observe and photograph the Asiatic Lion. Limited number of Jeeps are allowed in the park for safaris and hence to avoid long queues, it is best to book online or book the safaris through the camp/lodge that you are staying in.
We did 4 safaris in 2 days – mornings and evenings and were not disappointed in seeing lions in the wild. The forest is dry and deciduous and it can get extremely hot in the evening safari which is from 3 to 6PM. The sanctuary does not have many animals. Besides lions, one can spot sambhar, spotted dear, neel ghai and if you are lucky leopards and hyenas.
There are also a number of species of birds that can be seen which include owls, magpies, buzzards and hordes of peacocks.
I had specifically gone to the park to see lions and I was not disappointed. For those who have gone on safaris in Africa, it is important to keep in mind that animals cannot be seen in the same numbers here. Whereas parts of the park are completely protected there are large parts through which runs a public road. Even in the protected part, there is a railway track running through which can be a major source of disturbance to animals.
Rajkot is the nearest airport and is about 3.5 to 4 hours drive
If you want to see Asiatic Lions in the wild, then a safari in the park is a must.
